Until 1976, Townfield Head Farm was a small dairy farm. In the 19th century, the owners supplemented their farming income by providing services to the cutlery industry such as grinding and polishing. After farming ceased, the farm mostly ran as a livery yard.
The renovation by Mark Woodward and his family began in 2004. The two barns adjoining the house have been carefully restored and then linked to the original house to form the conference facilities.
Green technologies are at the core of the renovation. Electricity is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a solar panel array and heating by ground source heat pumps. To retain power and heat provided by these techologies, high levels of insulation have been fitted.
